GPRS (General Packet Radio Service) represents an evolution of the GSM standard, which allows transmission of packet data and high speed transmission mode compared to circuit switching mode. This evolution is usually presented under the heading of 2.5 G to indicate that it is a technology transition between 2G and 3G.

The GPRS network architecture reuses the nodes of the GSM network such as MSC / VLR, HLR, and BSS. Nodes in the network has been further for transporting data packets. These nodes are the gateway support nodes GPRS (GGSN) and Service GPRS Support Nodes (SGSN). The subregional network formed by the SGSN and GGSN is called the GPRS core network. To reuse the GSM nodes, new interfaces are defined between the GSM network nodes and the different elements of the GPRS core network.

The following interfaces GPRS network

1. SGSN – SGSN is the node that is serving the MS, is responsible for the MMG. Offers packages of manuscripts and communicates with the HLR to obtain subscriber profile GPRS. Manages the registration of new mobile subscribers in order to keep track of the Angels for routing purposes. The SGSN can be connected to one or more BSS.

2. GGSN – The GGSN provides things that work with packet data networks external (PDN). It may be linked to one or more data networks. SGSN is connected through an IP based GPRS backbone network. The GGSN is a router that incoming packets forward from the external PDN to the SGSN of the Member States addressed. Outgoing packets is also referred to the external PDN. The NDP is the fixed external data network that is connected to the GPRS network. An example of an NDP is the Internet.

3. HLR - The HLR is a database that contains, among other things, the domain Package subscription data and routing information.

4. Mobile Switching Center / logs visitor location (MSC / VLR) – The MSC coordinates the establishment of the calls to and from GSM users and manages the mobility of GSM. The MSC is not directly involved in the GPRS network. Forward circuit switched paging for GPRS connected to SGSN Member States when the Gs interface is present.

BSS 5. – The BSS warrants the radio connection between mobile and network. It is responsible for the management of radio access. The BSS consists of two elements: the BTS and BSC. The BTS integrates all radio transmissions and reception of radio boards. The BSC is responsible for the management of radio channels. The BSC has switching capabilities that are used for circuit switched calls and can also be used for GPRS traffic.

6. EIR – The EIR is a database data containing the identity of the terminal.

One of the main features of GPRS is that establishing a physical connection in uplink only when Member States must send continuous data to the network and on the downlink when the network only to send continuous data to Member States. This physical connection released in a direction as soon as the entity sending no more data to send. Different schemes of radio resource allocation (RR) management have been identified in order to multiplex multiple EM in the same physical channel.
