Not all car cigarette lighters work as sources of energy, or is only for newer models?

I drive a Corolla 2000 and wants to be able to charge my iPod in the car. I have a car charger from Kensington, but do not fit into the cigarette lighter slot and I see no other places to cover The instructions say it in order to be connected to power cars or light IGC. Am I missing something? Thanks for your help.
