Mid Atlantic Canyons
Water transport plays an important role in transporting heavy and bulky goods, transport over long distances. There are 11 major ports and 139 small ports working in India. Our country is surrounded by sea on three sides, which has helped in the development of international trade. Main part of the other, no transport is as cheap as water forms. No maintenance. All you need for them is good that ports have adequate facilities for loading and unloading goods. Water transport can be divided into two types: inland waterways and maritime transport.
Major rivers and lakes are used as waterways. Large rivers like the Amazon and Mississippi, etc. are used by large ships. In India, the Brahmaputra and the Ganges are the only navigable rivers.
This includes transportation of heavy goods such as grain, ore and mineral oil through the sea route.
Some of the major shipping routes are:
North Atlantic Route
This is a sea route connecting the Atlantic, Pacific, across Canada. This is the path busiest sea in the world.
The Suez Canal Route
This canal connects the Mediterranean Sea with the Gulf of Suez and Red Sea. It was opened in 1869. Previously you had to pass through the Cape of Good Hope for England, which took almost 6 months, but this channel has reduced the time required. Now it takes only two months to reach England. It is about 160 miles long.
The route of the Panama Canal
The Panama Canal became operational in the year 1914. This canal connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean. This channel has been significantly reduced travel time of 8 hours between the two oceans. In early ships had to pass around Cape Horn.
Water Transport in India
In India, Ganges and Brahmaputra, are used as internal waters. Gaps Kerala is also used for the ports of Mumbai, Kandla, Marmagoa, New Mangalore, Cochin, Chennai, Vishakapatnam, Paraddwip and Calcutta. Mumbai is the busiest port of all.
